happy 23rd birthday, qiyan =)

qiyan gets dunked and drags poor kenneth along with him.
i went to qiyan's birthday party later in the evening and met up with some of my jc mates. i do think june has never changed and will never change, she was as funny as ever and entertained us with her law stories, discussed cars, make-up and bags, while proclaiming that she hated public transport because people can be really smelly. the rest of us brushed her off as being atas and she candidly professed to lack empathy. there is no malice about her so you can't really blame her, for she comes from a very well-to-do family and probably never had to worry about serious financial problems.
i'm not well-read on the issue of meritocracy and social mobility, but i think everybody will agree that having money opens up far more opportunities. there are possible ways in which we can tap on the system for aid, but it really depends on your own motivation level and how conducive your environment is. the system can tell you that if you work hard, you will reap your rewards, but when a student is worrying about being kicked out by hdb because his parents have defaulted in their payment of their housing loan, the last thing that he wants to do is to complete your homework and prepare for your test. when he fails your test again and again because he's more concerned about earning money and you show your displeasure by rebuking him, he gives up and falls deeper and deeper into the vicious cycle of failure. here you can't blame the teacher entirely because his/her performance grade affects how well his/her students perform. i lament that a student is short-sighted because instead of keeping his salary for a rainy day, he spends it on the latest handphone model, but i fail to recognise that perhaps after facing so many disappointments at home and in school, the only thing that raises his self-worth is that he is able to buy his own handphone and feel proud about it.
i wonder how many students i can help on top of all my other commitments, and i think its good to go back to the old man and starfish story - every starfish picked up and thrown back into the sea is a starfish saved.
